There’s more to a beautiful home than pretty things. Most of us know this simple fact, but many tend to overlook or ignore the need for harmony in our lives and the place we call home.
First and foremost should be comfort. For me, that means clean, clutter-free order; colors that are in harmony; furnishings that allow for good traffic flow; and furniture that works well together, in scale, color and style.
Yet, good design is lost if there isn’t a sense of order or peace. Order of “stuff” and peace within each person and the sum total of the home’s inhabitants is the first step to creating a beautiful setting. With the stress of busy lives, and all that entails, peace and harmony can be hard to attain but it’s truly worth the effort.
There are all sorts of web sites loaded with organizational tips. The inner peace can take a little longer to find.

Just like light fixtures or home accessories, beautiful draperies can add a sumptuous feeling of quiet luxury to a room. I’m not talking about the window panels you can pick up at Target. (I’m a great fan of Target, but not for draperies.)
By sumptuous, I’m talking about custom made draperies, made to order. They come in all sorts of yummy fabrics, chosen to complement the furnishings in a room. They feel delectable when you touch them and have a beautiful weight to their lined loveliness, which helps them hang oh-so-beautifully.
Then there are the choices of hardware. Mmmm…. My personal favorite is a simple, yet heavy, oil rubbed bronze. I’ve never been fond of the heavy wooden dowels, but that’s a personal
choice. I just do my best to steer people away from draperies that are too over-the-top dramatic, as in the case of swags, pulls, garish fringes, or puddling drapes. You know the kind of draperies that hung on stages in movie theatres, when our parents were young? You’ll probably see this style of drapery on “The Real Housewives of New Jersey”, but that’s just a guess.
There’s a sense of permanence to fine draperies. I think it’s because they are found in homes that people plan to stay in for the foreseeable future, and because they can set you back a thousand or three, per window. But if you can justify the expense, they add the final oomph! to any room. test

The age old myth to ‘never mix patterns’ may apply when getting dressed in the morning, but it’s certainly not true when decorating your home. As long as the patterns have complementary colors, styles and fabric, you should be in good shape. Just don’t go overboard though. Pillows are a great place to experiment with pattern. So take a chance and walk on the wild side!

Ahh, burgers on the BBQ and friends stopping by to enjoy the 4th. This is summer at its best! If you’d like to freshen up a space in your home for very little money, consider one or two of the following “under $100 quick fixes” for your next low-budget home improvement project.
- Create a welcoming entryway to your home with a new mat and pot of fresh annuals. Be sure to trim back overgrown bushes that block your front door and sweep away the spider webs!
- Clean and clear clutter that’s accumulated on table and countertops, or anywhere else it lurks.
- Paint! An accent wall, a front door, a bathroom…can make a world of difference with fresh paint!
- Assess furniture, art and accessory placement for balance, flow and overall appeal. This is a freebie!
- Update a light fixture.
- Add new towels and a rug to your guest bath after you do a quick wipe-down. Bathrooms should be spotless!
- Change old bath fixtures and towel racks. Replace worn out chrome or polished brass fixtures with polished nickle or rubbed bronze pieces, to update a bathroom quickly. While we’re in the bathroom, wooden toilet seats, mildewed shower curtains and grout have got to go!
- Window treatments that are beautiful and effective
- New Bedding…try a “bed in a bag” from Walmart, Target or Marshall’s for less than $100.
- Cabinet pulls transform a kitchen in a matter of minutes, making old cabinets look new!
